Sound

Sound

Planning for sound with the new plot.

Hiii! I hate to break it, but...we changed our entire opening sequence and plot. Everything was so mixed-match, and I was getting very frustrated that we couldn't execute the scenes properly since it dealt with such dark and intense topics, especially with our fight scene. I was practically at a dead end trying to patch up our mistakes since it resembled so much of a trailer. Hence, this blog will explore the new concept of our project, and I will create new blogs redoing and explaining it soon!

Editing Process:

The editing will be done mostly by me because I used to run an editing account, so I am the most experienced in editing. However, everyone will definitely help out as we will edit together when we meet up to film and discuss our project. We will be using Adobe as our editing software since Jaden gets it for free due to taking Com-Tech as one of his electives. Additionally, we will be using non-copyrighted music from different websites, YouTube, and online sounds, and will make some of our own sounds using a Foley Session. Thus, after filming is completely concluded, we will likely begin the editing and extra revisions for sound.

Sound Being Used:

In the beginning, our opening sequence uses diegetic sounds as our main character, Emily, hums as she puts her hair in ponytails and packs her backpack with dolls. In more detail, a zipper noise is heard as she closes her backpack (synchronous sound) to make it evident that she is getting ready to go out to the audience. As she makes her way to the kitchen, asynchronous sounds can be heard as her mother (Anna) is cutting fruits on a cutting board. Although she is not in the frame, it is clear what she is doing, which is cooking/cutting. We added a short dialogue between Anna and Emily to establish their relationship as Anna said, "Honey, be safe," and Emily replied, "Don't worry, Mom." As all of this is happening, the radio is playing in the background as it discusses the recent increase of missing children in the area, so the audience can automatically forbid that something bad will happen since Emily is going out alone.

In the middle, after Emily speaks to her mother, she makes her way to the door to tie her shoe and closes the door (a door creak and click noise can be heard) to illustrate that she is leaving. Happy and upbeat music (non-diegetic sound) begins to play as she skips to the playground with her footsteps hitting the concrete sidewalk to evoke a light-hearted and joyful mood, which will do a one-eighty once the kidnapping begins. Moreover, as it shows close-ups of her surroundings, missing posters can be seen with a rustling noise to call attention to the sudden new sound and the creepy posters. Next, a J-cut (sound bridge) will be used to transition to her at the playground as police sirens from the next scene begin before the visuals of the shot are shown. Therefore, this allows a transfer and time-skip to her new scenery, and the police sirens will add a tense and fearful mood as they are curious as to why they are there or think that it might be a hint at the future.

Towards the end, when she makes her way to the playground after the J-cut, the happy music (non-diegetic sound) begins to distort. In fact, the audience is the only person who can hear this, allowing them to predict her unfortunate fate and leave a heart-wrenching effect as they watch her wander alone. Sand footsteps can be heard as she runs around, and loud steps on the metal flooring of the playground can be heard as she goes to the top to go down the slide. Furthermore, the scene switches to P.O.V. (point-of-view) as it focuses on the swing, as it mysteriously starts swinging back and forth, though she is alone with the wind (sound) to give an eerie effect. Her breathing and heartbeat can be heard loud and clear as she starts to become nervous, leaving the audience to interpret that she is now in danger and someone is after her. As she turns around, she sees a masked man, she screams loudly, and the man puts a bag over her head with a bag-rustling noise to make it obvious that she is getting kidnapped. Overall, we used sound to emphasize and foreshadow the plot.
