Costuming

Costuming

For the horror and mystery genre we are going for, costuming is important to symbolize their character and personality, especially for the antagonist or evil character. For example, Jason Davis will be our psychopath with his all-black costume that consists of a black turtle neck, black pants, and black boots/shoes to help him stand out and also hint at some bad omen associated with his character, especially since black is connected to death and evilness. His hair is going to be very messy, outgrown, dirty, and long, with a bit of peach fuzz on his chin to give him the look of a hobo and suggest that he might lack self-care, health, and hygiene, showing that his health is potentially at risk. Plus, he has a few props, such as a black backpack and a variety of different clothing, for the scene where he gets into a heated argument with Jaden Davis (his brother), quickly packs away some of his belongings, and runs away to show that their relationship is bad as Jaden is trying to protect him, but Jason does not like being controlled, and a bottle of pills that are prescribed to him to suggest a mental illness and lack of sanity. Additionally, he has a second costume, which is the clown costume, which consists of a long colorful suit with a bunch of patterns and designs, a rainbow wig, white gloves, a red top hat with a green flower, a big red nose, and yellow, red, and long shoes with a scary clown mask that looks like an older human. In addition, he has the props of an axe and black trash bags. The outfit and props completely contrast with each other as there is a happy and colorful clown with a dangerous weapon and what seems to be bags with dead bodies inside, showing some sort of insanity and sinisterness. It creates an eerie tone and anxious mood from the mysterious and spine-chilling moment of the difference.

For the other brother, which is Jaden Davis, we used costuming to display that he is more responsible and sensible compared to Jason Davis. He has a very business-casual outfit, which includes a white button-up, black dress pants, and black dress shoes. Thus, this makes him seem proper and well-mannered. Plus, his other props involving his costuming consist of an expensive watch, a phone, and missing posters. The watch might be a sign of reliability and his dependable nature. Moreover, the phone will be used during the phone call with Anna Miller (friend) about his brother's disappearance, and the missing posters will be used when his brother goes missing, and he desperately tries to find him as he puts them around their neighborhood to show that he cares and loves his brother and feels the duty to protect him. Hence, this creates a whole new character who is sane and trustworthy, which is significantly different from his brother.

For Anna Miller, who is the friend, we decided to give her a blue shirt, baggy jeans, white and brown sandals, and a ponytail to display her trustful and honest personality as she is on the phone (her only prop) with Jaden with her basic and clean outfit that is blue since it is associated with these traits. In addition, the blue outfit helps depict the sadness of Jaden losing his brother, but it can also mean a bad omen, which helps foreshadow the sinister plot twist to come as the plot is currently ambiguous. In more detail, she is concerned about his well-being as he talks about hearing and seeing things as a vase drops behind him. Furthermore, the neat ponytail and simple makeup show her feminity and comforting nature, as well as her properness. Overall, she is a calming character who adds to the plot to help the audience understand Jaden's emotions as he speaks about his brother to her.
